An unnamed San Bernardino city police officer and a reserve officer were on patrol just before 7:25 a.m. near the intersection of 5th and H streets when they spotted a man officials described only as a Latino man in his early 30s walking south on H Street.
When the 32-year-oldman began to head south on 5th Street, over the bridge that crosses the 215 Freeway, the officers tried to stop the man to speak to him. When asked why the officers wanted to speak to the man, Lt. Gwen Waters said she did not know.
The man ran away before the officers could speak to him, heading west on 5th Street. He allegedly pulled out a gun while he ran and fired a shot twice at the officers.
The sworn officer then pulled out his gun and shot the man several times, Waters said.
The man, wounded, continue to run and made it to the backyard of a home in the 900 block of Spruce Street, where he collapsed.
Paramedics arrived and rushed the man to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m.
Waters said investigators recovered a handgun at the scene along with a screwdriver.
In an unrelated incident, police shot and killed a man around 12:45 a.m. on the 4800 block of Axtell Street in El Sereno.
Officers responded a call of an assault with a deadly weapon when they were confronted by the suspect. Officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A gun was recovered from the scene.
Neither suspect have been identified pending notification of next of kin.
