LAKE VIEW TERRACE, Calif. (KTLA) -- A man suspected in a freeway shooting spree in San Diego is due in court Thursday to face charges.

Enrique Ayon, 24, of Lancaster, was arrested around 10 a.m. Tuesday after CHP officers followed his vehicle from the southbound 5 Freeway in Newhall to Lake View Terrace. A motorist reportedly spotted his vehicle and called 911.

He is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful use of a weapon and firing into an occupied dwelling in connection with the shootings, which occurred within a 20 minute time span Monday morning on interstates 805 and 5. Ayon is scheduled to be arraigned in San Diego Thursday.

Witnesses spotted Ayon's vehicle -- a white Chevy Malibu with the California license plate 5POM917 -- near the shooting scenes.

The Malibu, carrying at least two men, was involved in a hit-and-run collision on East San Ysidro Boulevard shortly before the shooting spree began around 10:30 a.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 805, near East Plaza Boulevard in National City, San Diego police said.

A short time later, a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg while driving northbound on I-805 near Mesa College. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Within the next 15 minutes, gunfire erupted on Interstate 805 near state Route 163, and on northbound Interstate 5 in the area of Del Mar Heights Road, police said.

Several vehicles were fired upon, including an ambulance and a CHP cruiser, San Diego police said. No injuries were reported.

A blue Volvo parked at a McDonalds on East Plaza Boulevard had bullet holes on the side, but the male driver was uninjured.

A motive in the shootings is not yet known.
