SAN GABRIEL-- A pilot was killed after his small plane crash landed, bursting into flames near a home, fire authorities said.

According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor, the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed and caught fire shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday.

The plane went down near Walnut Grove Avenue just north of Grand Avenue in Rosemead, according to Captain Curtis Hummell of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

One person was killed in the crash, said Hummell. The victim was believed by investigators to be the pilot and only person aboard the small plane.

Investigators did not identify the pilot, but according to the FAA Registry, the aircraft was registered to David E. Flotho of Grants Pass, Oregon.

Firefighters extinguished the fiery wreck which was reportedly "fully engulfed" in flames and had endangered a nearby house.

Authorities say the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing in a parking lot but ran out of room, skidded across a street and hit a brick wall.

The plane departed from Brackett Field in La Verne about 25 miles east of the crash site and was on a short flight to Van Nuys, according to Gregor.

Investigators from both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently working on the active crash investigation.
