LOS ANGELES -- Southwest Airlines has announced some policy changes, one of them is very good news for pet owners.

Starting with tickets booked June 1, for travel June 17 or later, passengers will be able to bring a small cat or dog aboard for a fee of $75 each way.

Travelers must make a pet reservation by phone beforehand, and the $75 pet fee must be paid in person at the airline's ticket counter.

Each passenger may bring only one pet carrier on board.

And the carrier will count as the passenger's carry-on and must be able to fit under the seat.

The pet carrier may contain up to two animals -- but they must be able to stand and turn around easily in the carrier.

Southwest also is increasing its service charge to check a third bag or an overweight bag that weighs 51 to 70 pounds.

The fee will be raised from $25 to $50 for customers traveling on or after June 17.

Southwest remains one of the only airlines that allows the first two bags for free.

Southwest will start charging $25 each way for unaccompanied minors traveling alone between the ages of 5 and 11.

The charge applies to tickets purchased June 1.

Unaccompanied minors may only travel on nonstop or direct flights, not on flights that change planes.
