LOS ANGELES -- KTLA may have found your money. California State Controller John Chiang says "We have $6 billion dollars that we want to return. Our unclaimed properties unit returns property back to their rightful owners."
Everything from forgotten bank accounts, to inactive insurance policies, to trust funds are all classified as unclaimed property. Many times, the owners don't realize this property even exists. "That's one of the great challenges, to tell people that our office is holding their property. Because it may be difficult to get a hold of them."
KTLA cameras tracked down Trudi Dieterle and were there when she got her golden ticket. Dieterle says "At first I thought it was some kind of a scam. I filled out the papers, sent them to Sacramento, a few weeks later I got the check."
But Trudi's not the only one! KTLA has learned the zip codes with some major change waiting to be claimed.
If you live in 92376, there is over three million dollars in unclaimed property. If you live in 91801, there's over $5.1 million. And if you reside somewhere between 92801 and 92809, there's more than ten million buckaroos sitting with the state controller.
So if you want to reunite with your riches, Chiang says "Go to the controller's website, click where it says unclaimed properties. With the holidays coming up, they might find a little extra stash of cash."
