Gary Haynes and another man were at a storage unit on the 1300 block of North Manzanita Street Saturday night when they were violently attacked by two suspects, according to Sgt. Dan Adams of the Orange Police Department.
The second victim, who has not been identified, was hit in the head with a gun but was able to escape. He went to the hospital that night but failed to alert police that Haynes was still at the scene.
A passerby later spotted Haynes on Sunday morning, unconscious, lying in his own vomit and covered in ants, according to his sister Lori Ward.
Ward says her brother suffered a broken eye socket, crushed vertebrae, broken scapula and other injuries to his skull.
Haynes passed away from his injuries Thursday afternoon.
Steve Fry, 40, and Sandra Higareda, 41, were arrested in connection with the beating, but Haynes' family is still searching for answers.
They especially want to know why his friend didn't try to get him help.
"I want to ask him why he left my brother there the way he did," Ward asked. "My brother didn't deserve that."
"I'm not sure if I'm angrier at him or the people who beat him up because his so-called friend left him behind."
Investigators believe Fry and Higareda went to the storage unit with the intention of harming the two men, but no motive has been named.
Higareda and Haynes had been friends in the past, according to Adams.
Fry and Higareda have been charged with felony counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
They are both being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
