PASADENA -- Hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger has been named the grand marshal of the 121st Rose Parade.
As the grand marshal, Sullenberger will head a flowery float in the 2010 New Year's Day parade themed "A Cut Above the Rest," parade officials announced Thursday.
After the parade, Sullenberger will be the coin-tosser for the 96th Rose Bowl Game, where two of the top college college football teams will be playing against each other.
"It has long been a family tradition to watch the Rose Parade," Sullenberger said.
Sullenberger gained international fame for successfully landing his passenger plane on the Hudson River in New York City after bird strikes crippled the airliner during takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport.
After passengers were evacuated, Sullenberger twice walked the sinking plane's watery aisle to make sure no one had been left behind.
All 155 people aboard Sullenberger's plane safely escaped the aircraft.
The 121st Rose Parade will take place on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. and will be airing locally on KTLA.
