SUNLAND, Calif. -- An intruder picked the wrong home to break into in Sunland overnight when he was greeted by a couple with a gun.

The man apparently bent a screen and climbed in through a front window of the home on Walnut Drive around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Maria Alvarado told KTLA that she and her husband were sleeping when they heard a loud noise and went downstairs to investigate.

Alvarado says the man was bleeding from a cut he suffered while climbing through the window.

He also kept saying he was being chased, and at one point ran upstairs and tried to hide in a closet, she said.

Alvarado says she grabbed a rifle kept in the bathroom and gave it to her husband, who held the suspect until police arrived.

The suspect, who may have been on drugs or alcohol, was expected to be booked for felony vandalism.

Police believe he tried to break into at least one other home in the neighborhood.

The homeowners were not injured.
