NEWPORT BEACH -- A man who died surfing big waves off Newport Beach Saturday morning has been identified by the Orange County Department of Coroner.

Lifeguards pulled 38-year-old Gregory Gladstone's body from the water near 14th Street and West Oceanfront around 10:15 a.m. Saturday, according to Larry Esslinger, supervising deputy coroner.

Surfers had previously reported a board floating off 15th street, and lifeguards found the body nearby.

Gladstone was unresponsive in the water, and lifeguards put him on a patrol boat and took him back to the pier, where Newport Beach firefighters and paramedics met them.

Gladstone was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital, and he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The cause of death was under investigation, Esslinger said. An autopsy will be conducted Monday.

Surf was described at a sizable 6 to 10 feet, with choppy conditions and rip currents.
