MID CITY (KTLA) -- Kaiser Permanente health care professionals are donating their time to patients in need during Saturday's Free Surgery Day.

The event took taking place at the West Los Angeles location.

"This is a very important program for us," founder Todd Sachs MD told KTLA. "It's part of our mission at Kaiser Permanente to care for members of our community."

Launched in 2009, the effort brings relief to many who do not have access to specialty care. Many of those who take advantage of the program have suffered for years with ailments such as hernias and gall bladder diseases.

Interested parties are evaluated by Kaiser Permanente's nonprofit partners for eligibility.
