FONTANA -- A fundraiser was held Wednesday in honor of a 7-year-old San Bernardino County boy who died from complications of swine flu.

Joey Holt's parents hosted the special 6-hour dinner at Corky's Diner in Rancho Cucamonga. They wanted to start a foundation to help parents pay for their kids' flu vaccinations. Joey had not received a flu shot, Jessica Holt told KTLA, adding that she regrets that decision.

"I never believed in that because I was not educated on flu vaccinations. I never thought, 'hey my kid needs this.' In all reality, they need it," she said.

A county health officer on Wednesday confirmed that the boy, from Fontana, died Nov. 5 at a hospital in Upland.

Jessica Holt says her son was sent home from school on Nov. 2 because of a fever but it went away.

She says he became pale and lethargic a couple days later.

She called an ambulance when he took a turn for the worse on Nov. 5. Doctors tried to revive him once he arrived at the hospital, but they couldn't get him back, Jessica Holt said.

She says the boy, who had asthma, had dreamed of becoming a doctor.

California health officials say nearly 300 people have died from swine flu complications in the state this year.
