Teacher shot and killed at Coast Career Institute (KTLA-TV) |
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A memorial was held Monday for the teacher who was shot and killed last week by a student after the two allegedly engaged in an argument.
It happened at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Coast Career Institute in the 1300 block of South Hill Street.
Investigators say the suspect, 22-year-old Law Thien Huynh, got into an argument with his teacher, 44-year-old Roberto Herrera, on the day of the shooting.
Huynh briefly left the classroom before returning with a gun and fired several shots at close range, police said. He then tossed the gun into the classroom and walked out of the building.
Herrera died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Arriving officers saw Huynh standing on the sidewalk outside the school and arrested him without incident. He was booked for murder at the Metropolitan Jail.
Huynh and 12 other students were attending a 24-week vocational class to become security guards.
Students were visibly shaken after witnessing the shooting, and say their instructor was a very nice guy.
No other students were injured, and it appears that the teacher was the intended victim.
The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
Herrera worked in the security industry, and had taught at the school as a side job for three years, school officials said.
