SAN BERNARDINO -- An 17-year-old who was critically wounded in a shooting that occurred as he drove to church in San Bernardino died at a hospital a few days later -- on his birthday.
Earlier in the week Pascual Popoca was driving to the church he attended frequently when he happened upon a shootout between two suspected gang members that wounded one and ended up in the death of another, authorities say. The surviving suspect, 43-year-old Ardell Holmes, Jr., was booked on suspicion of murdering Popoca. Ivory Lee Houston, 32, was killed in the shootout. Popoca died at a hospital Wednesday about 5 p.m., according to San Bernardino police.
Popoca was "an innocent guy, just driving, doing something good," Elias Alexander Cardenas, at Cristiana el Camino De Las Asambleas de Dios church, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper. "He was coming to church. I don't believe it."
Holmes, who is in custody, was hospitalized after he was shot in the eye during the melee. Police submitted a case against Holmes to the San Bernardino County District Attorney today.
