LOS ANGELES -- Police are searching for a suspect responsible for killing a 15-year-old boy and wounding an 11-year-old girl in an apparent attempt to steal the boy's bicycle.
At around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a call of shots fired at Mission Road and Broadway in the Lincoln Park area and found 15-year-old Miguel Machuca lying on the ground with a gunshot wound in his upper torso, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.
An 11-year-old girl who was standing nearby was hit by a stray bullet in her back, officers said.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported both Machuca and the 11-year-old girl to a local hospital. Shortly after, Machuca died from his injuries.
The 11-year-old girl was listed in stable condition.
According to officers, Machuca was with a friend in the area when the male Hispanic suspect demanded their bikes, then pulled out a gun and fired several rounds at him. The boy had reportedly already handed over the bicycle when he was shot.
