HIGHLAND PARK (KTLA) -- The Los Angeles Police Department planned to announced a $50,000 reward on Thursday for anyone who can help find the killer of a teenage boy.

17-year-old Jonathan Val was gunned down for no apparent reason on the afternoon of April 28, 2010 in Highland Park, according to police.

Authorities say Val was confronted by three men in a car as he stood on the sidewalk by an apartment building in the 390 block of North Avenue.

One man in the car pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to police.

Val was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where died a short time later.

Detectives say the shooting may have been in retaliation for the murder of Richard Chavez, 33, in Cypress Park two days earlier.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (213) 847-4261.
