TEMECULA, Calif. (KTLA) -- Deputies arrested a teacher's assistant at a Temecula elementary school Thursday after her 12-year-old daughter was found wandering naked through a neighborhood, eating from trash cans, officials said.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies responded about 12:30 p.m. to a 911 call made from the 29000 block of Avenida De Calazada. The caller reported seeing a naked girl walking through the neighborhood, fishing food from trashcans, according to a sheriff's news release.

After searching the neighborhood, the deputies found the 12-year-old girl, naked, in a vehicle nearby, according to the news release.

An investigation revealed the girl's mother, Tracy Betts, 40, works as a teacher's assistant at Vail Elementary School, near where the girl was found. Deputies discovered, through investigation, that Betts left her daughter in the car, according to the news release.

Betts was arrested at 2:20 p.m. at Vail Elementary and now faces child endangerment charges. She was booked at Southwest Detention Center in French Valley.

She was released Friday after posting $15,000 and is due in court April 12.

The girl was taken into protective custody and was treated at a nearby hospital.
