TEMPLE CITY ( KTLA) -- A vicious attack on a man and his dog by at least 1 pit bull and 3 other large dogs, including an American bull dog, is being investigated by animal control officials as an entire neighborhood calls for action to be taken against the dogs and their owner.

According to the victim, neighbors and the owner of the dogs, John Wachter was walking his 15 year old yellow Labrador Retriever, Chloe, Saturday, October 9th through his Temple City neighborhood.

Suddenly, a large pit bull pushed its way under a chain link fence and attacked Wachter and his dog. Three other dogs also slipped under the fence and attacked. Wachter did his best to fight against the attack. The owner of the pit bull and the other dogs also came out and tried to stop the dogs from attacking.

"All at once there was four dogs on one and they were all just ripping the hell out of her," Wachter said.

According to Wachter, the fierce fight went on for nearly 15 minutes. Wachter even threw one of the 70-pound dogs into the street and was knocked down. Wachter says when he got back up, the dog was already back in the fight.

Wachter and the dogs' owner were able to stop the attack. The owner of the attacking dogs was severely bitten on his hands and lost the tip of one of his fingers.

This is not the first time these dogs have attacked. Neighbors tell KTLA the same dogs attacked a woman and her dog a year ago. The owner paid the woman's veterinarian bills.

People in the community east of downtown L.A. tell KTLA they fear the dogs may one day attack a child.

Temple City animal control officials tell KTLA they investigated the attack and turned it over to L.A. County animal control. In the meantime, Chloe is slowly recovering from the emergency trauma surgery of dozens of wounds. The dog has several drainage tubes hanging out of her body along with stitches.

The owner of the pit bulls told KTLA he hopes to reach a resolution with neighbors as long as it does not involve putting the dogs down.
