RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) -- UC Riverside officials will be offering free tuberculosis tests to students, faculty and staff after a confirmed case of active TB was detected in one student.

The student, who has not been identified, tested positive for the disease last week, according to campus officials.

The student has been moved from a residence hall to an off-campus apartment, and has been given a good prognosis for recovery.

No other students have shown symptoms of TB, according to Campus Health Center senior physician Dr. Charles Maletz.

Notices were sent to about 1,500 people who may have come into contact with the sick student.

"While health officials say there is generally low risk of transmission of the disease, the studentÂ’s closest associates on campus have been personally notified and are being asked to come in for screening and subsequent monitoring," the university said in a statement released by spokeswoman Kris Lovekin.

The infected student will not be cleared to return to classes "until the contagion has passed," Lovekin said, likely in four to six weeks.

Tuberculosis is usually transmitted through the air -- by coughing, sneezing, speaking or singing, for example.

It is not spread by hand-shaking, sharing food or drinks or kissing.
