UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. -- One lane and two ramps of the northbound Ventura (101) Freeway were shut down for about four hours Monday morning after police found a suspicious device inside a car during a traffic stop.
The device was discovered around 3:00 a.m. Monday when the driver of a Scion was pulled over for drunk driving on Lankershim Boulevard north of the freeway, police said.
The driver began acting suspiciously, prompting officers to search the vehicle, Los Angeles Police Department officials said. Inside, they found what appeared to be a pipe bomb.
A police bomb squad was brought in, and a robot retrieved the suspicious item from the car just before 6:30 a.m. The device -- which turned out to be fireworks -- was detonated and later deemed safe.
Lankershim Blvd. was closed in the area as well as the Metro Red Line Station's Universal City stop.
Closures included the Lankershim Boulevard offramp and onramp.
All lanes were reopened about 7 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos
