GLENDORA -- A woman from Glendora fell 1,000 feet to her death Sunday while hiking with family in Utah.

Nancy Maltez, 55, apparently stumbled and fell from the north side of the Angels Landing observation point in Zion National Park, according to National Park Service spokesman Ron Terry.

Maltez was hiking with her husband and three children, ages 14 to 20, when she fell from the cliff, Terry said. Maltez was killed instantly.

The fall was reported to St. George police just before 8:30 a.m. by a hiker with a cell phone.

The Park Service and the Washington County sheriff's office are investigating.

Terry said search and rescue efforts temporarily closed a portion of the West Rim Trail and climbing routes on the north side of Angels Landing.

Crews recovered Maltez's body about eight hours later.

Angels Landing is one of the highest points in the park. The popular 2.5-mile Angels Landing trail ascends 1,500 feet to a lookout with views of the park and the Virgin River.

Terry said the last fatal fall from Angels Landing was in 2007.
