VAN NUYS -- Police have arrested a suspect who was barricaded inside a home in Van Nuys for several hours after an attempted burglary.
SWAT officers entered the home and emerged with a young man in a T-shirt shortly after 8:30 a.m.
Officers at the LAPD's Van Nuys Station said police responded to a burglar alarm about 3:30 a.m. in the 14900 block of Gilmore Street, just north of the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Kester Avenue.
"When the officers arrived, they found the door pried open, they could hear noises on the inside," police Lt. John Romero told KTLA.
After additional officers arrived to secure the location, motion detectors inside the home were activated, an additional panic alarm went off and sounds were heard from inside, Romero said.
"We believe that the suspect is still contained in the house," Romero told KTLA.
Police contacted the man who lives in the home, and he said he was out of town.
The man also said there were several weapons, including assault rifles, in the residence. Authorities were worried the suspect has access to those weapons.
Police blocked off the intersection at Victory and Kester, and set up a mobile command post along Kester.
A helicopter and K-9 units were at the scene.
They also evacuated about a dozen neighboring houses and two multi-unit apartment buildings. The evacuees were accommodated at the gymnasium of nearby Van Nuys High School.
