VENICE -- Authorities say a man was killed after he was struck and dragged by a Metro bus as he tried to cross a street in Venice.

The 30-year-old man was attempting to cross South Pacific Avenue, near the border with Santa Monica at 4:32 p.m. when he was hit, officials said.

The bus was going west on Rose Avenue, made a stop, and then turned right to go north on Pacific at the time of the collision, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Rayner said.

The victim was dragged underneath the bus for more than a block before another driver hailed the bus down, officials said.

It's believed the pedestrian may have been in the bus driver's blind spot as the vehicle made a wide turn.

"From the time he was hit to where he ended up was over 700 feet, 710 feet, approximately, which is very unusual," said LAPD Officer John Stafford. "The bus driver obviously had no idea," he said.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident.

The 51-year-old bus driver was said to be shaken after the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
