The woman, identified Brenda Williams, 56, died at the scene.
Police received reports around 7:15 p.m. of a woman threatening to shoot family members outside a residence on the 10000 block of Anzack Avenue.
As many as 5 officers responded to the scene and confronted the woman.
That's when the shooting occurred, LAPD Deputy Chief Pat Gannon said.
LAPD would not confirm to KTLA what led to the fatal shooting.
The victim's daughter and her children have been taken in to Southeast Division headquarters for questioning.
An investigation is currently underway.
The incident marked the second deadly officer-involved shooting in the Watts area Wednesday.
Earlier, police shot and killed a man who allegedly threatened them with a shotgun.
