WEST HOLLYWOOD (KTLA) -- The West Hollywood city council voted to finalize a ban on smoking in outdoor dining areas and restaurants.

There was no opposition to the move at a council meeting on Tuesday night.

The new ban will take effect in 2012.

Only bars and nightclubs will be exempt.

Supporters say the ordinance will improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.

Opponents argued the law doesn't do enough to define which establishments have to abide by the restrictions.

Another potential regulation being debated in West Hollywood would ban cigarette sales within 600 feet of a school.
