Stolen vehicle suspect flees to Westwood rooftops (KTLA-TV) |
WESTWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- After holding officers at bay on a rooftop in Westwood for more than 5 hours, a stolen car suspect is now in police custody.
It all began with the LAPD following a man and a woman driving a suspected stolen car in West Los Angeles.
The male driver bailed out of the car on foot in the 800 block of Malcolm Avenue.
The woman was taken into custody, but the man climbed up onto the roof of a house.
He walking around for hours, jumping back and forth between two adjacent rooftops.
He smoked several cigarettes and at times put his hands inside his shirt and pockets, prompting concerns that he could be armed.
The suspect has reportedly told officers, "If I could get to my gun, I would kill all of you."
Officers left ladders for him to climb down, but he refused to come down voluntarily.
Several times, he inched toward the edge of the roof, but then retreated.
Then, just before 1:00 p.m., SWAT officers shot the suspect with beanbag rounds.
He quickly surrendered.
Officers handcuffed him and carried him off the roof.
