WHITTIER -- A standing-room-only crowd that included hundreds of friends, family and well-wishers were on hand for chapel services and a subsequent burial Saturday for high school student Melody Ross, an innocent bystander fatally shot in an alleged gang attack outside her school in Long Beach.
Services were held at the Rose Hills Memorial Park's SkyRose Chapel in Whittier for the girl whose life was cut down at the age of 16. She was shot at Ximeno Avenue and 10th Street in Long Beach Oct. 30 as she and her friends were leaving a homecoming game at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach. At the chapel, uncle Sam Che pointed to a large photograph of Melody and said, "Look at her smile."
Two 16-year-old gang members have been charged as adults in connection with the homicide.
Tom Love Vinson and Daivion Davis are each charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Davis pleaded not guilty. Vinson's arraignment is Monday. The suspects are being held on $3 million bail and face life in prison if convicted.
Vinson and Daivion allegedly opened fire that night outside the school, striking and killing Ross, a popular honor student.
Two men -- an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old -- were wounded in the shooting, which occurred about 10 p.m. as crowds of students gathered outside the campus.
Several hundred people had congregated there following the football game, according to Long Beach Police Sgt. Dina Zapalski.
Wilson's Coach Mario Morales said he heard five to seven shots as he was leaving the stadium after the game against Long Beach Poly.
Police believe the wounded men may have been the intended targets and that the shooting was the result of a gang feud.
Ross was wearing a superhero costume because it was the day before Halloween.
A fund was established to help the slain girl's family with funeral costs.
Donations to the family should be made out to:
Long Beach Education Foundation Melody Ross Memorial Trust Account, I.D. #33-0357679
Checks should be mailed to:
