CABAZON -- A woman was struck by lightning as she shopped at the Cabazon Outlet mall, according to a Cal Fire spokeswoman.

Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire says the woman was walking in the parking lot of the mall just afternoon when she was struck by lightning. She was transported to a local hotel after suffering what are described as "moderate" injuries.

The Cabazon Outlet Mall is located on Interstate 10 on Seminole Drive in Riverside County, just north of Palm Springs.

Thunderstorms and lightning are being reported across Southern California as a slow-moving, low pressure system over the Pacific Ocean is moving up the coast.

As many as six fires in the Inland Empire are being blamed on lightning strikes.

In the United States, each year, 80 people are killed by lightning strikes. The odds are 1 in 28,000 that any one person will be struck.
