A Tracy man got into a fight with a police officer after he tried to take the officer's gun Thursday.

Police say the officer was patrolling a residential area on Hawthorne Drive when he spotted 31-year-old Samuel Flores De Ramos walking down the sidewalk, wearing only underwear and acting strangely.

The officer approached De Ramos to see if he was sick or under the influence. De Ramos grabbed the officer’s gun and tried to snatch it from its holster.

A violent struggle between the officer and De Ramos lasted for two and a half minutes before police backup could arrive. It took five officers to finally get the suspect under control, according to a news release from Tracy Police.

Though De Ramos’ mugshot is graphic, Tracy Police say he only suffered abrasions and contusions. De Ramos was treated and released into custody by a nearby hospital. He's expected to make a full recovery.

De Ramos’ last encounter with Tracy Police was on Jan. 31, when he threatened suicide and said that he wanted to take an officer’s gun and force police to kill him. It took several officers to restrain him that time, as well.

The suspect is now in custody with the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department.
