A late-night fire that broke out inside a Bronx apartment building has left a 65-year-old dead, after officials said he re-entered the burning home to search for his stepdaughter who wasn't even home.

According to authorities, the fire started in the third-floor apartment along East. 234th St. in the Wakefield section right before 1 a.m. Friday.

Tyril Royer, a resident of the building, reportedly searched for his 22-year-old stepdaughter Kemara James as the flames moved through the apartment.

James, who managed to escape when the fire first broke out, told the New York Daily News her father was a "hero."

"He thought I was inside and he died trying to save me."

Responding EMS transported Royer to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. No other injuries were reported.
