YONKERS, NEW YORK (WPIX)—
Parents of children at Yonkers School 22 were alarmed to learn about a 5th grader, who apparently jabbed several other students with a diabetes testing pen. While they were concerned about the student's actions, many said they were more upset about how they learned about the incident."I expected to hear it through the school, but I heard it last night on the local news," said the parent of one 5th grader, Shannon McGovern.
"There was no notice, nothing sent home telling us what happened in the school or if we should check our kids," said Michelle Garcia, another parent.
According to Yonkers Police, the incident took place in the middle of the school day on Tuesday. Officers were called to Saint Joseph's Hospital after two kids pricked by the 5th grader's needle went to the hospital for observation.
PIX11 called school officials several times for comment, however, the district was limited in their response and only issued this statement from Communications Director, Maura Lamoreaux:
"The District responded immediately to the situation at School 22 involving seven students. Dr. Alfred Cordero, head of the District's Health and Wellness Dept., oversaw response and ensured that each student was attended to properly. The school's administration contacted the parents of the students involved and enacted the District's Code of Conduct to follow proper disciplinary measures."
Police say they are not treating this case as a crime and disciplinary action will be left up to the school. PIX11 spoke with student's mother, who declined to comment.
