In what reads like an extremely disturbing case, a Manhattan woman has been charged with inducing her own abortion then dumping the fetus in a trash bin.According to authorities, 20-year-old Yaribely Almonte apparently aborted the female fetus, wrapped it in plastic then trashed in a bin outside her home on W. 191st Street in Washington Heights.
Although details about the actual abortion weren't immediately known, officials found enough evidence to charge Almonte with self-abortion. A self-induced abortion can range from a number of ways including taking medication to self-inflicted abdominal injuries.
A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
According to New York state law, a woman can be charged with self abortion if she is pregnant for "more than 24-weeks and commits or submits to an abortional act upon herself which prompts a miscarriage."
