PISMO BEACH -- A surfer was taken to a hospital after being bitten by a shark at Pismo Beach, authorities said.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said a 19-year-old man was bitten on his foot Friday in the ocean near Silver Shoals.
The surfer was out of the water with a cut on his left foot when the fire department arrived. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
He told authorities the shark was about four feet long and brown in color, with white spots.
Officials determined this was a credible dangerous marine mammal sighting, and posted advisories at area beaches.
The attack comes just days after the National Park Service issued a great white shark warning has been issued for swimmers along the Southern California coast.
That warning was prompted by attacks on sea lions around the Channel Islands in recent weeks, and remains in effect until further notice.
