Programming in Spanish via SAP

August 25, 2008

Many stereo television sets have a feature in their audio equipment that allows the reception of sound other than the main audio for the program.

This feature is called Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS). A TV set with MTS can receive mono sound, stereo sound, or Secondary Audio Program ( SAP ).

The SAP feature allows a TV station to broadcast other information to the viewer through the audio receive system. Usually, this mechanism is used for the simultaneous broadcast or simulcast in Spanish of a program. This allows the viewer to tune the Spanish language audio of a program which is broadcast in English on the Main Audio track – Mono or Stereo . Some stations use the SAP to broadcast weather information or video description for the visually impaired – Descriptive Video Services (DVS ).

KTLA, Channel 5, often provides programming with Spanish language audio through the Secondary Audio Program (SAP). The station's evening news program, News at Ten, is simulcast in Spanish nightly, Monday through Friday.

On most television sets, the SAP can be activated or deactivated through a menu, using the remote control. Each TV set is different; follow the instructions on the operations manual. If you do not have a remote control or your owner's manual, contact the store where you purchased your TV set. They could help you obtain another manual or a universal remote control that will work with your television sets. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• If you are watching television using your VCR as a receiver, then use the remote control for the VCR to select SAP or Main Audio. Alternatively, if you are not using a VCR, but viewing the TV directly via cable or antenna, just use the remote control that came with the television set.

• The SAP feature is only on television sets that are stereo . Even if you have a newer model TV, SAP wll not be available if your set has only mono sound.

• Some remote controls have a button labelled MTS , SAP , or Audio Select. Try pressing this button in succession in order to cycle through the various audio modes, Mono – Stereo – SAP.

If there is no button on the remote control, press the MENU button to bring up your television's on-screen menu and look for options like Setup , Audio Setup , or Audio to find the selections available for MTS , or SAP . If you wish to tune the original English version of the program, click on Main or Stereo and if you wish to tune the Spanish language version, click on SAP .

KTLA normally inserts program audio (English) on the SAP channel when a program does not have Spanish dialogue recorded on its SAP channel.
