Madeleine Albright became the first woman to be appointed U.S. secretary of state when she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate under the administration of President Bill Clinton. She was sworn in Jan. 23, 1997. Prior to her secretary of state appointment, Madeleine Albright served as the United States representative to the United Nations and as a member of President Clinton's Cabinet and National Security Council. In the early 1980s, Madeleine Albright was awarded a fellowship at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars at the Smithsonian.
