Evanston-based Rotary is an international service organization that has some 1.2 million business, professional and community leader members in 32,000 clubs situated in more than 200 countries. Its stated mission is "to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards and to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders." Clubs of Rotarians are supposed to be apolitical, non-religious and open to people of all backgrounds, - though women weren't admitted until 1989. The motto of Rotarians is "Service above self," service in the workplace, to the community and across the globe. Eradicating polio around the world has been Rotary's chief priority since 1985, and it has contributed more than $600 million to the effort through its collaboration with international health agencies. In November 2007, Rotary and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $200 million effort to stamp out remaining pockets of the disease. Rotary calls itself the world's first service club. It was founded in Chicago in February 1905 by lawyer Paul Harris. The name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. As the clubs spread far and wide, the organization added "International" to its name in 1922. During and immediately after World War II, Rotary was active in promoting conferences on international education and cultural exchanges, helping inspire the founding of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO. Rotarians continue to participate as observers in UN conferences.
