AirTran Holdings Inc. is the parent company of AirTran Airways, a commercial airline based in Orlando, Fla. AirTran is a low-cost carrier that operates more than 700 flights a day to more than 50 cities, with a route network centered around its hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. AirTran operates a fleet of about 140 jets, all of which are Boeing 717s or Boeing 737s. It made more than $1.8 billion in gross revenue in 2006. The company was founded in 1992 as ValuJet Airlines and nearly collapsed following the May 11, 1996 crash of ValuJet Flight 592 in the Florida Everglades, which killed all 110 people onboard. On July 10, 1997, ValuJet acquired Orlando-based AirTran Airways and subsequently assumed the smaller company's name.

AirTran's chairman is Joe Leonard, and its chief executive officer is Bob Fornaro. It is a publicly held company and trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol AAI.
