Johnny "Red" Kerr, now the longtime team broadcaster, earned NBA Coach of the Year Honors that first season. The Bulls rose to international prominence during the 1990s when, led by Michael Jordan, they won six NBA titles in eight seasons. Those teams were abundant in colorful personalities such as coach Phil Jackson, Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen. Bulls games became a destination for basketball fans and celebrities alike. Home games included a tradition, now copied by every team in the league, of dimming the lights and introducing the players to music. After the sixth NBA title in 1998, the team was dismantled. Rightly or wrongly, team Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and then-general manager Jerry Krause received the brunt of blame for alienating Jordan, who had said he wouldn't play for any other coach but Jackson. Jordan retired. Jackson went on to coach the Los Angeles Lakers. Scottie Pippen got traded to the Houston Rockets. The Bulls began a long period of mediocrity under coach Tim Floyd. A recent resurgence, led by former player and current general manager John Paxson, has the Bulls viable again.
