Dale Jr., was born on Oct. 10, 1974 in Kannapolis, N.C. After spending time on the short track circuit, he ran his first NASCAR race in 1999 at Charlotte and won his first race in 2000 at Texas. Despite the magical Earnhardt name, some believe he has never reached his potential as a driver. Despite that criticism, he has won 17 races.
Some said his loyalty to DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc., his father's company) has held him back. But in June 2007, in a very public feud with his stepmother, Theresa, he announced he was leaving DEI to join Hendrick Motorsports. Junior, as he is known, wanted control of DEI so he could build the kind of car he believed he needed to win a championship. Hendrick is one of the most successful race teams going and fans will soon find out if it was the car or the driver that was holding Junior back.
The crowning achievement of Junior's career was winning the Daytona 500 in 2004 but most will remember his win in the Pepsi 400 in the first race run at Daytona International Speedway after the death of his father there in February.
