Federal Hill Park

Federal Hill Park is a public park located on the southern side of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, near Fort McHenry. In 1608, it was named after Capt. John Smith, who was the first explorer to see the hill; he described it as "a giant bank of red clay." Federal Hill Park was given its current name in 1788 during a citywide celebration of Maryland ratifying the U.S. Constitution; some 4,000 Baltimoreans came to the hill to celebrate. The park is considered one of the oldest in the city, and was incorporated into the city's park plan in 1904. It is also known for its role as a lookout point during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Erosion and cave-ins were a problem during the 20th century because...  Show more »

It is also known for its role as a lookout point during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Erosion and cave-ins were a problem during the 20th century because of a series of tunnels underneath the hill; it was determined in 1992 that the tunnels were part of a mine used to quarry sand for glassware. The land problems, among other issues, sparked a series of renovations for the park that include a refurbishment project that was completed in 1995. In 2000, the park was rededicated after a nearly $2 million stabalization project to combat an erosion problem.  « Show less
